This three year old little girl named Acinda is the middle daughter of one of our Iris Pastors in Dondo, Mozambique. In early 2010 I was painting a mural on the outer wall of the Bible School. At this time a series of health education classes were being held in the building and her mother was attending. The girls spent the days outside in the area where I was. Acinda was very interested in what I was doing and spent a great deal of time watching me. At one point I turned around to find her fully engaged in watching, with her arms and head resting upon the table with all my paints, and quickly took her photo.

In April 2010 in Dondo, Mozambique I went out in the village to watch some of our boys play soccer. This young girl walked up and I was immediately captivated by her and took her photo.

One night as I was close to finishing this painting and searching for the name, I looked intently at her and the word “dignity” came to mind. Yes I thought, she does, she looks so dignified. I then began to think of her dignity in relation to where we were, standing next to homes made of bamboo and dried mud with dirt floors and dusty yards. Suddenly I knew the title needed to include ‘Dignity’ and ‘Dirt’.

I photographed this teenage girl in the village of Maranganha, in Northern Mozambique. As I looked at her picture it was as if the look in her eyes beckoned me to discover the parts of her that I could not know through just a quick glance or a casual hello. I kept her photo on display and prayed for the wisdom to be able to convey this impression. My answer came in the Biblical verse, Proverbs 20:5.

Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water,

I met this little girl when I was living and serving in Pemba, Mozambique. I loved her great big smile and bright eyes.

When her painting was almost complete I was asking the Lord what the title should be. The word “reason” continued to come to mind. I decided to research its use in the Bible and Ephesians 3:14 instantly had my attention. It begins with – “For this Reason.”
